On June 28, 2022, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus hosted a round table meeting «Economic science of the Republic of Belarus in the new geo-economic context», timed to coincide with the Economist’s Day. The event was attended by leading experts of our country, representatives of scientific and educational spheres.

Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir GUSAKOV noted that today the world economy is becoming different. «There is a destruction of the existing world order, an aggravation of confrontation between the largest global economies, a deliberate destruction of international value chains under the guise of sanctions, a sharp increase in unilateral protectionism. In this context the role of economic science increases significantly. Taking into account new challenges and threats, the scientific approach makes it possible to soberly assess the situation and determine the ways for further development of both macroeconomics and the economy of industries and enterprises. In order to mobilize the scientific potential of the country and solve topical theoretical, methodological and practical problems of socio-economic development, the Interdisciplinary Research Cluster «Belarusian Economic School» was created and operates on the basis of the Center of Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Its tasks include ensuring the continuity of scientific traditions, supporting the research of young scientists, participating in the formation and implementation of scientific and educational programs. Economic scientists face very difficult tasks, but history shows that even in the most similar situations, our country adequately coped with all the trials. I am sure that this will continue in the future», says Vladimir GUSAKOV.

One of the most important areas of work of Belarusian economic scientists is personnel training. An example of close cooperation between academic scientists and scientists of the higher education system was the preparation for the release of the first domestic study guide «Modern Political Economy». Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir GUSAKOV awarded the following people with the Honorary Diplomas of the Academy of Sciences for fruitful participation in the work of the Interdisciplinary Research Cluster «Belarusian Economic School»: the Rector of Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov Valentina BOGATYREVA, Head of the Department of Innovation Management of BSU Valery BAYNEV, Head of the Department of Economics and Law of BNTU Sergey SOLODOVNIKOV, Professor of the Department of International Business of BSEU Galina SHMARLOVSKAYA.

Academician-Secretary of the Department of Humanities and Arts of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander KOVALENIA recalled that the Institute of Economics of NAS of Belarus is the head organization for the Economic subprogram of the SPSR «Society and Humanitarian Security of the Country». «It is important to unite the efforts of economic, industry and university science, ensure the consolidation of competencies, more actively carry out joint applied research projects, and more boldly take on the solution of core tasks of scientific support for government bodies. Only by joint efforts we will be able to solve the tasks that time puts on the agenda. The further development of the Belarusian economy requires an appropriate response to challenges and threats, it is necessary to find new drivers of economic development and mechanisms to ensure the country’s economic security, which will be able to ensure long-term, sustainable and high-quality development of the economic growth of our country. A special role in solving these problems is given to economic scientists. Today it is necessary to search for new ways, forms and mechanisms that would make it possible not only to maintain the achieved level of development of our economy, but also to strengthen it significantly », Alexander KOVALENIA believes.

Vasili HURSKY, Director of the Institute of Economics of NAS of Belarus, made a presentation. He emphasized that economic science provides an understanding of the essence of the processes taking place in the economy and the actions of economic laws, opportunities and threats for the development of the economy, the interests of various groups and subjects and the means of promoting them within the framework of the country’s economic policy. «Today the contradictory combination of the processes of globalization and regionalization of the world economy, the desire for a redistribution of markets and the aggressive sanctions of individual countries necessitates the development of effective methods for protecting the sovereignty and national interests of the country. These and other issues form the current agenda of economic research for the Institute of Economics of NAS of Belarus. Economic relations in modern conditions are becoming more complex. Economic science is turning into an instrument of ideological and political struggle. The «Belarusian Economic School» sees the task of economic science not only in understanding the law of social production and distribution, but in giving practical recommendations for appropriate changes in the economic policy of the state in accordance with the national interests of our country. It is impossible to conduct a national economic policy in accordance with the public interest without deep fundamental economic research. The Belarusian socio-economic model is being built on the basis of the developments of Belarusian economists, historians, sociologists. Today scientists have the opportunity, based on their own research, to analyze international experience, develop an independent, scientifically based, balanced economic policy in accordance with the national interests of the country», said Vasili HURSKY.

The Head of the Department of Innovation Management of BSU Valeriy BAYNEV in his report dwelled on the problems of the new scientific and educational paradigm of economic science, which is a factor of national security not only for our state, but for the entire world economy, and proposed developments in the field of the costly doctrine of economic development, which today dominates in the world.
